Women's History Month 2025

Women’s History Month is observed from March 1 to March 31, honoring the countless contributions and achievements of women throughout history.

According to womenshistorymonth.gov, the celebration began in 1981 as Women’s History Week when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28. President Ronald Reagan officially recognized the observance during the week of March 7, 1982.

In 1987, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned to extend the celebration to a full month. Congress passed a resolution to recognize March as Women’s History Month, with additional resolutions from 1988 to 1994 further solidifying the observance.

Since 1994, every U.S. president has issued an annual proclamation declaring March as Women’s History Month.

Additionally, March 8 is recognized globally as International Women’s Day, honoring the achievements of women world wide.

Women Alumni Spotlight

Michele Fiore

Broadcast journalist Michele Fiore, a proud Triton College alum, has covered a wide range of important topics—from politics and protests to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the demands of reporting on such impactful stories, she remains deeply connected to her roots.

“My education and instructors at Triton gave me all the tools I needed to have a successful career,” she said.

Growing up in Elmwood Park, Fiore first became acquainted with Triton as a middle schooler. Introduced by her sisters to Dr. Eugene Schlabach, head of the music department, she studied classical music under his instruction, playing Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart and Scarlatti.

“I had a lot of interests when I was younger,” she recalls. “I loved music, TV, writing and theater.”

Following her many passions, Fiore hosted local television programs in Elmhurst and Elmwood Park. Blending her love of writing, performing and broadcasting, Fiore decided to study journalism at Triton College, earning a full ride scholarship.

“At Triton, I studied journalism under Jackie Pledger-Skwerski, who became one of my most beloved instructors,” she said. “I was also the editor-in-chief of the Fifth Avenue Journal. I worked part time at WRRG-AM, Triton TV and Elmwood Park Cable Television News.”

After earning her associate degree from Triton, Fiore continued her studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU) majoring in broadcast journalism and minoring in women’s studies.

Since then, Fiore’s career has taken off, with anchoring and reporting roles in Chicago, Milwaukee, Springfield, Ill., and Decatur, Ill. Today she is an on-air reporter for CBS58 in Milwaukee.

“Triton started me on a solid path in my chosen profession, allowing opportunities to grow,” she said.
